Relations between moderate Muslim States and the Vatican are in question after the Pope has angered Turkey, after his use of the term 'Genocide' to describe the deaths of a reported 1.5 million Armenians, after World War One during the split of the Ottoman Empire (1915-1916). Turkey have so far recalled their ambassador from Rome, and sent for the the Vatican's ambassador to Ankara for an explanation.Turkey have always refuted the claims of genocide and they describe the numbers of people who died were much less, Turkey maintains that those who died was because of WWI clashes and that many ethnic Turks also suffered because of the clashes. There are few countries that recognise that genocide was committed; Argentina, Belgium, Canada, France, Italy, Russia and Uruguay.
