Previously, Malawi had one of the youngest rate of child marriages in the world. Teenagers were able to get married at age 16. Well, now President Peter Mutharika has raised the age of marriage to 18 years. This law is only between men and women as gay rights are still looked down upon severely in Malawi. More than half of Malawi's population live below the poverty line, so inputting a law that makes sure one cannot be married at sixteen will hopeful help beat the teen pregnancy rate and ultimately not leave 16 year olds as financially responsible for a baby in poverty. The law states that if a sixteen your old male were to have a child, his family would be responsible for all the finances of the baby.
