Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron is using the unrest with Iran and North Korea as a catalyst for the defense of Britain's nuclear deterrent. Cameron is preparing to travel to Scotland where he will welcome home the crew of a nuclear-armed submarine. He will also speak to defense industry workers that their jobs are more secure under a unified Britain. Nationalists in Scotland will be seeking independence next year and want to remove nuclear-armed submarines. Britain currently maintains four submarines that carry Trident missiles. Lawmakers in Britain are debating on the costs of replacing these submarines, particularly when Scotland says they will not allow them to be based there once they are independent, which is a possibility under a referendum in September of 2014. Prime Minister Cameron has stated that there are people who disagree with nuclear deterrents and that we can't afford Trident anymore, so he responded that "we either need to find a viable cheaper solution, or rely on the United States to protect us." Cameron argues that the threat has not gone away, and if anything, increased with Iran and North Korea's nuclear ambitions.
