G.I. Is Killed Freeing Prisoners of ISIS in Iraq, First in 4 Years

American and Kurdish commandos raided an Islamic state prison in Iraq, freeing 70 prisoners. During the raid, an American soldier was fatally wounded. The soldier was the first to be killed in action since 2011. Four Kurdish soldiers were wounded. The American forces involved in the raid were a part of the U.S. Joint Special Operations Command.

The raid was an important strike against ISIS. Five Islamic state fighters were detained and killed and commandos were able to retrieve important information about the terrorist group. The commandos had expected to rescue 20 prisoners but ended up saving 70, even throughout a firefight. The prisoners who were freed said that the militants had decided to execute them at dawn after their morning prayer, and that they were to be buried in a trench that had already been dug.
