This weekend a powerful tropical storm hit the island nation of Philippines. The storm came with winds of up to 150 mph and dropped 39 inches of rain on the main island of Luzon. While the main city of Manila was not directly hit by the storm, some 20,000 citizens were still displaced due to the Typhoon Koppu. Some residents in more remote places were not able to be reached because of the poor road conditions in the country. So far only two people have been killed by the storm but the number is expected to rise as the storm moves closer to more densely populated areas on the island. The storm isn't expected to move back out to sea until early Tuesday. The storm comes at a time when the country was already experiencing a lot of internal turmoil. Such turmoil and corruption has made rescue efforts even more difficult then it should be.
The Typhoon has also strained the Philippine armed forces has they try to aid in the recovery effort. The recovery effort is expected to take at least a month. This means that the Philippine armed forces are depleted in the South China Sea. China could see this perceived weakness and further their aggression and expansion in the region.
