China has been creating islands in the South China Sea amongst the Spratly Islands. Spokesman Hua Chunyin said the islands are to protect China's sovereignty and maritime rights. However, since the islands are being created in waters in which the Philippines, Vietnam, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia and Japan have competing claims tensions are rising. These other countries are viewing these new islands as a territory grab by China. However, China assures that other countries will be able to use the islands for search and rescue, research, and fishing.
