In a continuation of thawing relations with Cuba, President Obama is nearing a decision to remove Cuba from a list of state sponsors of terrorism. The President is waiting on a formal review from the State Department before releasing his decision, as well as recommendation from his aides. His decision comes at an opportune time as both he and Cuban President Raul Castro will be in Panama this week for the Summit of the Americas. Taking Cuba off the list would just leave three countries (Iran, Syria, and Sudan) on the list and open up opportunities for Cuba to access financial systems, as well as make a major improvement to relations between the two neighbors. While in the area, the President has also visited Jamaica and has spoken with members of the Caribbean Community. Hopefully, Mr. Obama's demonstrated commitment to improving relations with Central and South American nations, as well as returning US-Cuban relations to pre-1962 levels, will enable the area to see increased economic conditions in addition to better Pan-American inter-cooperation.
