ECB’s Draghi Says Anxiety About Monetary Union Is Misplaced

Three days prior to the French election the president of the European Central Bank (ECB), Mario Draghi, held an interview and defended the highly-criticized EU monetary union, and its effects on growth across its member states. In his defense, he states the EU is being “wrongly held responsible”, and that other relatable causes are too blame in the countries that are struggling. Pointing to structural and fiscal policy in those countries Draghi is offering a combating pose towards the populous rhetoric against the EU, which comes at a time of increasing political stress especially in France. Mario Draghi also offers the perspective, in his interview, that Europe needs to remain interconnected and in order for its citizens to see that the EU is not as ineffective as they think, that their citizens need to look beyond their own board to see the whole of the EU.
