James Comey, the director of the FBI, who investigated the misconduct committed by Hillary Clinton in her use of a private e-mail server for government business, and who was investigating the possible involvement of Russian operatives in the 2016 election, has been fired by Donald Trump. Memos released by Rod J. Rosenstein, the Deputy Attorney General, stated that he suggested the firing of Comey to Trump for Comey's failure to seek charges in response to Clinton's e-mail scandal.
Comey served as the Deputy Attorney General during the George W. Bush administration, and was put in office with wide bipartisan support.
