Years After Boko Haram Kidnapping, Dozens of Girls Are Freed, Nigeria Says

On Saturday, 82 of the 300 Nigerian girls who kidnapped by the Boko Haram, an Islamic militant group were released in exchange for detained members of the terrorist group. Over the past eight years, the government has been at war with the Boko Haram which has "burned, killed, and kidnapped its way across West Africa, killing thousands and causing millions to flee for their lives" (Searcey, 2017). These girls had been kidnapped three years ago from their school and have been subject to forced marriages to militants and becoming combatants themselves. The kidnapping of the girls has spurred an international humanitarian crisis, and despite the aid of the International Committee of the Red Cross and the Swiss and American governments there has not been much progress made in the dismantling of this militant group.
