Heir to Saudi Arabian throne passes away

On Saturday, October 23rd, 2011, heir to the Saudi Arabian throne, Crown Prince Sultan bin Abdulaziz Al-Saud, passed away in a New yorkhospital. Sultan is the half-brother of King Abdullah and many speculatedthat he has been ill for some time, battling cancer and was receiving treatment in the United States. With the prince's death, many are now speculating as to who will King Abdullah choose next to be his heir. Unlike the European tradition of old where kings would usually pass on the throne to their sons, the process for choosing an heir in Saudi Arabia is much more different and involves a much more complicated route. President Obama extended his condolences and stated that Sultan was a "strong supporter of the deep and enduring partnership between our two contries". Many are saying that the most likely candidate to take the place of the late crown prince is Nayef, Saudi Arabia's second deputy prime minister; this position is often held by the second in line to the throne. Many Saudi Arabian citizens have seen Nayef as a reputed conservative.
