There were elections to assign five seats with a two year term on the UN Security Council. Usually it is done by regions and the seats are endorsed in advance, but this year's high number of contestants made the process longer and the result unpredictable. Four of the seats are designated to Guatemala, Morocco, Togo, India, and Pakistan but the fifth seat is still contested. Those five new members will replace five of the ten temporary members of the council.
Diplomats do not think that India's and Pakistan's regional disputes will play a big role here, because their position on many international issues are similar. Diplomats believe that the bigger impact may be on wider council dynamics, for example they suspect that Pakistan will join emerging powers in resisting western attempts to impose sanctions to Syria and Iran, continuing Brazil's position whose term is ending.
