Cuban Spy freed from United States Prison

Convicted for spying in the United States in 1998, Rene Gonzalez has now been freed after servingthe majority of a fifteen-year sentence; he was a prisoner of the United States for a total of thirteen years and twenty six days. Even after an early release, however, he will still need to serve three years of probation. Gonzalez was one of five in a group of spies called the "Cuban Five". All were arrested during the year 1998. The group was convicted once more in 2001 when a Miami jury accusedthe five members of being part of the Wasp Network, and that they had spied in U.S. military bases andon Cuban-American exile leaders. Defendants however would argue that they had planted spies due to the reason thatthe group had wanted to "defend Cuba from hardline anti-Castro groups in Miami whom they feared may attack the island".While they were mainly seen as somewhat antagonistic here in the U.S., they were seen as heroes in their homeland of Cuba, calling them "political prisoners" unjustly punished on American soil, and Fidel Castro had often advocated for their release.

The five members of the "Cuban Five" were:

Rene Gonzalez
Ruben Campa
Gerardo Hernandez
Luis Medina
Antonio Guerrero
