Blood Diamonds

This article explains the industry of blood diamonds and the Kimberley Process. The Kimberley process made a regulation that Countries that could not prove that their diamonds were conflict-free could be suspended from the international diamond trade. However, there are many problems in the Kimberley Process. One of the problems is the definition of the conflicts. The definition of the conflicts was very narrow, so they could not regulate the countries which sell the diamond for the conflicts. When I researched about the blood diamond, my feeling was very complicated because this industry helped the children who cannot go to school and had to earn money for their family even though it was a part of the fund of conflict and illegal. In this way, the sometimes illegal industry helped the country and the children. It is not legal, so the other countries and international organizations cannot ignore this system, but actually, they helped someone. Blood diamond was an illegal industry and they had become a source of funds for conflicts, so I think it was good for people to regulate that industry. However, I’m sure there are much worse businesses in the world that I don’t know. If these businesses helped the countries and the children who lived in the country, should we be cracking down on those businesses based solely on whether it is illegal or not?
