As the new Covid-19 variant spreads across the globe, Japan has announced the suspension of entry for foreign visitors. Prime Minister Fumio Kishida has explained this decision by saying, "We are taking the step as an emergency precaution to prevent a worst-case scenario in Japan". This new measure will be in effect by Tuesday of this week. Other countries are also planning to tighten their borders after learning about the new variant, which has been named the omicron variant. However, it has yet to be confirmed by scientists on whether or not the omicron variant is more concerning than other past variants, such as the delta variant. Nevertheless, the fears and anxieties that come from learning about another Covid-19 variant has led to stronger border control and travel bans around the world in order to slow down its spread.
