As a recent surge of Covid-19 cases hit Austria, the country decides to enter a full nationwide lockdown last Monday in order to combat these rising cases. The surge of cases follow a busy weekend that occurred at Christmas markets across the country as people get into the holiday spirit. This lockdown is currently expected to last for 20 days at most, but the situation will be reevaluated 10 days into the lockdown. While the country plans to lift measures by December 13th, they may choose to extend these measures past the 13th for those who are unvaccinated. On the topic of vaccinations, the Chancellor of Austria, Alexander Schallenberg, has made a statement last Friday that there will be a nationwide Covid vaccine mandate established on February 1st. Just like with other countries, such as the U.S., strong opinions on the Covid vaccine have created rifts in Austria between those who choose to get it and those who refuse to get it. With the vaccine mandate announcement, those in the country who strongly against the Covid vaccine have responded to this news with protest.
