"Angola President Lourenço Set for Another Term Amid Allegations of Unfair Vote"

Angola's President Joao Lourenco is about to win his second term since 2017. He comes from Angloa's MPLA party or 'Popular Movement for the Liberation of Angola' which has been in power for nearly five decades now. Lourneco won with 51 percent of the vote, the narrowest margin yet in Angola. Under Lourenco's last term, Angola suffered five consecutive years of recession and low oil prices, which are the country's main export. Even with the recent rising oil prices around the world due to the Ukraine conflict,   In the coming years, "In the coming years, the IMF [International Monetary Fund] expects 70% of government revenue to go towards servicing Angola’s $73 billion debt." I chose this article because Angola is an interesting developing country with a very large potential on the global stage many untapped resources compared to its neighbors. It's future depends on its leadership and the way its resources are managed. An autocratic regime in power for this long is indicative of severe corruption. Although it is disheartening seeing Angola's people pay the price in terms of recession while a corrupt government profits off of them, this election might also represent a turning point in the country's history as Lourenco won by a slim margin.
