Italian Right Is On Course to Win Elections

"Italian Right Is On Course to Win Elections"

Sept. 25th, 2022

The article talks about the ongoing election in Italy for premier. Right now Giorgia Meloni has a very strong lead. Meloni has expressed sentiments towards an 'ital-exit' or distancing from the EU. Regardless, parts of 'Fratelli d'Italia'-brothers of Italy party plan which Meloni is a part of include working with the E.U. to impose a cap on the price of natural gas and to decouple gas and electricity prices. Meloni is more moderate and has distanced her party from far right more radical leaders such as Matteo Salvini and aims to continue supporting the Ukrainian war effort against Russia. It will be interesting how the new government performs on the world stage. The article goes on to mention some of the issues Italy is dealing with at the moment including a debt that is roughly 150 percent of its gdp. Meloni's rise to power would signify a shift to the right not seen since 2011 in Italy.
