There are two suspicious gas pipeline leaks running from Russia to Germany under the Baltic Sea, called the Nord Stream pipelines. These leaks sparked investigation from European countries, and although there has been no final conclusion to the cause of these leaks, possible answers include malfunctions, lack of maintenance, or even sabotage.
Neither of the pipelines were active in the process of the leakage, but they were both filled with gas. Extreme environmental damage will result, as there is already a "swirling mass of methane" bubbling up in the Baltic Sea.
CNN states that this leakage could be a flashpoints in an escalating energy war between Moscow and European capitalists, which has already pummeled major Western economies. Many Europeans are blaming Russia for the leaks, exclaiming that it was an attempt to further weaken Europe's energy security, especially in a time where many nations are trying to wean themselves off dependency of Russian supplies.
