“We must speak the ugly truths about Queen Elizabeth and Britain’s empire”

While this is an opinion piece, I believe it is necessary because it holds some very important details regarding the racist and problematic history of England’s monarchy.  As much as the Queen has been honored and memorialized since her death, some have not been as quick to look fondly back on her reign.  This article delves into the timeline of British colonization as it lines up with royalty, as well as the human rights violations committed by these ideas.  While the monarchy is mostly symbolic now, it still represents all of these crimes and will continue to do so until those in positions of power step up and take accountability.  Karen Attiah ended her article with a powerful quote: “We can speak the truth about that history even as we pause to wish her spirit and her family well during this transition. And then we must get back to work — to dismantle the present-day vestiges of the racist, colonial empire she so dutifully represented” (Attiah).
