Early this morning a 6.9-magnitude earthquake hit Taiwan in a rural southeastern township named Chishang. This earthquake was devastating, destroying buildings, derailing trains, and trapping drivers on mountain roads. While exact numbers are uncertain, 146 injuries have been recorded at this point in time, with more estimated to be confirmed as time goes on. Another issue has been aftershocks, which continue to rock the area. Experts from Japan’s Meteorological Agency were also worried about more chaos to come, as Tsunami warnings had been issued. These warnings were later removed, but there is potential for tsunami waves on coastlines in close proximity to southeastern Taiwan. 110 Taiwanese soldiers were sent to the coast to help with disaster relief. This disaster is largely due to where Taiwan sits geographically. Taiwan is a particularly vulnerable area for earthquakes as it sits between two tectonic plates. Other devastating earthquakes had occurred in the recent past, with over 100 dying from an earthquake in 2016, and more than 2000 dying during an earthquake in 1999.
