Why Iranian Women Are Burning Their Hijabs After the Death of Mahsa Amini

This Friday, Mahsa Amini died while in the custody of Iran's "morality police". She was arrested for reportedly not wearing her hijab correctly, and therefore, wasn't dressed conservatively enough. It is seen that Amini took multiple blows to the head before she died.

In response to this tragic event, many Islamic women are fuming with outrage and disgust, and are burning their hijabs as a form of protest. It is clear that this killing sparked outrage towards women all over Iran over the strict rules and consequences for breaking those rules. They are protesting against the gender-based violence women in Iran experience everyday, and how the government does nothing to protect them. British-Iranian actor, Omid Djalili, said that this is "Iran's George Floyd moment", as they are fighting for the abolition of the morality police, similar to how Americans fought for police reforms after Floyd's murder.

A final remark Malley exclaimed is "Iran must end its violence against women for exercising their fundamental rights".
