Anti-government forces in Syria have united to form a National Council, and immediately released a statement that demands global assistance in helping to put an end to the human rights issues that have been occuring in the embattled country. The United Nations has said that 2,700 people (100 children) have died over the last 6 months, stemming from protests against Bashar al-Assad, the president of Syria. The Syrian government has placed this total at only 700, while also providing a seemingly convenient estimation that 700 of their own forces have been casaulties of the protests as well.
The opposition groups forming the National Council include the Damascus Declaration, the Muslim Brotherhood, other Islamic based groups, and grassroots activists that appear to have united under the cause of defending the Syrian people from the oppressive regime in power. It remains to be seen how the National Council will shape itself moving forward, but even more intriguing will be watching how prominent countries around the world respond to their requests of aid and constructive intervention. France has already given public support to the Council, but countries such as the United States have yet to follow. China and Russia are both deeply involved in the situation as well, because of their sizeable purchases of oil from Syria. How these countries, and the UN, decide to handle this situation of escalating and grave concern will certainly impact the future of Syria, and most importantly, its people.
