In Tripoli, Abu Salim was once an ominous presence outside of the city. The prison held thousands of men during Kadafi's regime, some for crimes, others for small infractions such as dressing like an Islamist. It was a place to send anyone who may threaten the dictatorship. The prison was the sight of a mass slaughter in 1996 when 1,200 prisoners were gunned down after a revolt. I think this prison shows the cruelty and paranoia that exists in many dictatorships. Kadafi and his security chief
Abdullah Senussi used the prison to deter opposition. It served as a reminder of Kadafi's power over his people but it now is an inspiration to prisoners and their families to speak out about the atrocities committed over the past decades.
