Smuggling of Uranium Thwarted

An Eastern European crime syndicate's plan to sell 4.4 grams of Uranium was stopped by authorities in the country of Moldova. A Russian man is believed to be in charge of this group but he is believed to have fled back to Russia after the Uranium deal fell through. Six people were arrested in the plot. It is believe that the group also has enough Plutonium to construct a “dirty bomb”. This is a lesser form of a nuclear device than a bomb using uranium; however, it it still lethal and does produce radioactivity but it is not as devastating as a bomb that is constructed with Uranium. The Uranium was traced back to a batch of Uranium that was used in Russian enrichment plant from the time of the collapse of the Soviet Union. The United States urged Russia to step up in its counter-proliferation efforts. This creates much fear among people as people still are able to procure nuclear material on the black market.
