Last week, I posted a blog discussing the rise of the Syrian National Council (SNC); a rise that apparently is continuing at rapid rates. The group has received recent support from prominent Western countries such as the United States and France, although those states have yet to recognize it as the legitimate governing body for the country. That question even being raised has elicited frustration on the part of the Syrian government, and foreign minister Walid al-Moualem asserted recently that "tough measures" will be taken against any country that denounces the current government in Syria, and recognizes the SNC.
This news comes amid growing numbers of protests in Syria, and also following the attacks and protests of Syrian embassies and missions in Germany and Switzerland. All of the turmoil, unrest, and violence involving Syria that has been brewing over the last months is starting to receive global attention on a greater scale. The Syrian people will be forced to decide whether to support the government or the opposition, and it seems as if countries around the world will have to make that decision sometime soon as well, whether Walid al-Moualem likes it or not.
