22 Dead at Soccer Game in Egypt

22 people are dead after a clash between fans and security outside a soccer stadium in Cairo, Egypt. Fans of the Zamalek soccer club tried to force their way through the gates into the stadium without tickets, which caused violence to erupt. The government suspended the national league championship due to the clash. Police used tear gas to disperse the angry fans, and a stampede broke out which added on to the total number of deaths. Another witness to the violence says that security was letting the fans in through a single barbed wire gate. When the gate collapsed, people started surging forward and the security started shooting at them. A fan said that about 50 people started piling up on each other, and people were carrying others away in order to save them from being trampled to death. This isn't a first time clash between security and soccer fans in Egypt. 3 years ago there were 70 people killed after a riot at a stadium in Port Said. Limits were placed on the number of people who could attend games, but that number was lifted a few weeks ago. It will be interesting to see how the investigation ordered by the Egyptian public prosecutor plays out.
