This past Friday, mayor Antonio Ledezma of Venezuela's capital, Caracas, was arrested by the government's special police forces, which broke the glass door into his office and threatened the mayor and the rest of individuals present with firearms. President Nicolas Maduro accused mayor Ledezma of plotting a coup against him and consequently ordered his arrest. Ledesma denied his involvement in any coup and said that this was another plot from Maduro to create controversy and harm his political opponents. People in Venezuela and around the world have been outraged by the numerous political prisoners that have been taken during this regime. In this case the violence with which mayor Ledezma was talking out of his office has sparked turmoil among citizens. President Maduro claims that there has been involvement from the United States in this alleged coup, which the United States has denied. Diego Aria, ambassador to the United Nations, states that the international community must realize that Venezuela is going through a dictatorship right now and that there should be a bigger involvement from the international community to restore democracy to this country.
