U.S Homeland Security Secretary Jeh Johnson has warned
Americans to be careful after the Somali-based terrorist group, al Shabab,
urged followers to carry out attacks on shopping centre's in the U.S, U.K, and Canada . Back in
2013, al Shabab attacked the Westgate shopping mall in Nairobi that killed 67 people, so this threat
should be taken very seriously. Mr. Johnson believes we have entered a
"new phase" of terrorism, where attacks will come from
"independent actors in their homeland." So could this mean the
followers of al Shabab could be here in the U.S right now? The article states
that, "Minnesota is home to a large
Somali population and a Minnesota
man was indicted last week on charges of conspiring to support Islamic
State." Al Shabab's video threat on the malls specifically mentioned Minnesota 's Mall of America, which is one of the biggest
malls in the U.S.
Other huge malls mentioned were Canada 's
West Edmonton Mall, and the U.K capital's
Westfield
shopping malls. Police and security in Canada ,
France , and Denmark have increased protection and are on
high alert after the recent attacks by the "home-grown" terrorists
inspired by ISIS and al-Shabab.
