Coptic Church Protest in Egypt

A deadly protest took place today in Cairo's Maspero Square and Tahrir Square, beginning outside the state TV building where Coptic Christians, originally intending to have a sit-in before the violence broke out, were calling for the resignation of the governor of the Aswan province and the military council. Tension has been building since February, when an uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak, and was made worse by an attack by Muslim radicals on a Coptic church last week. Discrimination is an issue faced by many Coptics in Egypt, and they feel that the government has not done enough to stop such attacks and has been too lenient on anti-Christian perpetrators.
The violence spread quickly and involved hundreds of people. Seventeen are believed to be have been killed in the protest. It is not known how many of those were protesters and how many were military.
