Desi Bouterse has been sentenced to 20 years in jail for the murder of 15 political prisoners in 1928.
The sitting president is currently on an official visit to China, which makes things quite awkward. He has two weeks to appeal the decision, which he is expected to do.
Bourtese led Suriname during the 1980s as head of a military government and de facto leader.
