India's capital faces the most hazardous air so far this year

The air pollution in New Delhi and surrounding cities reached the worst levels so far on Sunday. This resulted in the capital city declaring a public health emergency and ordered  the closure of schools. The air in north India has reached an air quality index (AQI)  of PM 2.5 with tiny particle matter in the air 900. Due to the wind speed picking up it could be a day or two before the levels reduce down to 500. This high AQI poses risks for people with respiratory problems and even to those who have healthy lungs. The pollution is caused from farmers burning the stubble. On Monday, the Supreme Court is likely to hear a petition from the environment agency in order to look for ways to take stricter measures against farmers burning their stubble.
