Pirates kidnap nine crew members from cargo ship off coast of Benin

Earlier this weekend a group of pirates off the coast of West Africa boarded and took control of a Norwegian vessel waiting to enter port to unload its' cargo. As of now a response team from the company that owns the vessel, J.J. Ugland, is working with local authorities to resolve the issue. This event occurred in the Gulf of Guinea which is referred to as the "world piracy hotspot." According to reports stated in the article, the seas around West Africa are some of the most dangerous in the world and as many as 73% of maritime kidnappings and 92% of hostage situations take place in the region. While it is not on many people's radars piracy is still a serious issue plaguing the shores of Africa.
