Mali's military abandons isolated outposts amid attacks. Dozens of Mali soldiers in the remote northern town of Labezanga, who served as the last line of defense against Islamic extremists, pulled out of the town earlier this month. The soldiers have now been stationed in central bases with the closest 100 kilometers from the town. The town is now defenseless and open to attack from the extremists. Mali soldiers have also pulled out of other northern towns, leaving the inhabitants worried that they will again be controlled by Islamic Extremists who implemented a harsh version of Islamic law. The military has seen a decrease in morale as more than one hundred soldiers have been killed in the last six weeks. The civilian population and widows of soldiers have grown outraged and have organized sit ins in the capital to protests the current situation and the Mali government's response to it. They have also directed their outrage at France, Mali's former colonizer, who has kept 5,000 soldiers in the Sahel region of West Africa to help create stability in the region. Citizens of Mali have called for France to leave the country as violence continues to erupt and spill over into neighboring Burkina Faso, leaving citizens of Burkina Faso worried about the future.
