This CNN article discusses the death of Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, the former leader of ISIS. Following his death, a recording from the terrorist group media wing al-Furquan stated that they already had a new leader. Abu Hamza al-Qarshi, the new leader, sent out a message telling America is not be happy with the death of ISIS’ former leader. He stated that ISIS is not only on the doorstep of Europe and in the center of Africa, but it is expanding east to west.
General Frank McKenzie, the commander of the US Central Command, discussed the final moments of Baghdadi’s life. It was stated that, “he crawled into a hole with two small children and blew himself up while his people stayed on the ground”. The pentagon released videos and images of the raid on Saturday, which pictured US forces as helicopters approached the compound. Overhead drones displayed aerial strikes carried out by fighter jets and reaper drones to blow up the site once it was invaded.
Baghdadi’s identity was clarified with comparing his DNA to a previous DNA sample at a detention at Camp Bucca in Iraq. It has been over a five-year hunt to find Baghdadi, but this doesn’t mean that the fight on terrorism is over. With the announcement of a new leader and a solid group of followers, ISIS is sure to retaliate or grow stronger as time passes.
