Today was the execution of a convicted murderer in Saudi Arabia, making this the fifth execution ordered by the new king. The convict was Abdelrahman al-Jahni, a Saudi citizen, who had killed another man during a dispute by gunning him down. The execution took the form of a beheading, which was undertaken in the holy city of Medina. Five other convicts have been beheaded since King Salman has taken the throne on January 23rd. This demonstrates how King Salman seems to be closely following his predecessors' footsteps. During King Abdallah's rule, the execution rates sky-rocketed from twenty-seven in 2010 to eighty-seven from last year's records. The internal government states that this continuance of the death penalty demonstrates how the government wishes to maintain security and enact justice in the country. Although members of the international community still criticize Saudi Arabia's adherence to human rights, including their use of the penalty. All the world can do is wait and see how closely the new King Salman will rule like his predecessor.
