18 Thailand Girls Die in Dormitory Fire

Authorities in Thailand in the midst of attempting to identify the remains of at least 18 female schoolchildren who were killed when a fire broke out. The girls--all between the ages of five and 12--were sleeping in their dorm at Pikakiatwittaya School Christian elementary school in the northern providence of Chiang Rai when the fire started.

Pikakiatwittaya School is unique as they offer free education to children of the surrounding area. They opened their doors 5 years ago, and say 60 percent of their students are poor children from nearby villages.

At this time it remains unclear how the fire started; authorities said they were rescue about 20 girls through the window, but noted the fire spread very rapidly.
