Obama to Relax U.S. Sanctions Against Myanmar

Beginning on Wednesday, the United States is going to be removing some restrictions and sanctions on Myanmar as the country continues to grow more stable as a democracy after years of being under harsh military rule. Obama is currently combining this economic nudge and diplomacy to help encourage greater openness between Myanmar and the United States. He has, however, also made it very clear that Myanmar's progression towards democracy is not a definite or fully achieved state, and that there will be repercussions for institutions hindering the state from this political reform. In addition, sanctions will remain on individuals violating human rights and supporting military trade with North Korea.
