Obama Weighs Visiting Hiroshima or Nagasaki

No American president during office has visited Hiroshima or Nagasaki since the atomic bombing. There are concerns that a visit would suggest an apology for the attacks. Obama believes that Japan doesn’t deserve a formal government apology, but has made an effort during his presidency to lower the threat and stockpiles of nuclear weapons. “Some historians say the bombings were unnecessary and even criminal, while others argue that they saved American lives and those of hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians who would have perished in an American invasion.” Obama plans to make changes in foreign policy with Japan. It’s interesting that the only nation that has ever used nuclear weapons is emphasizing nonproliferation.
