On Earth Day, representatives from all over the world gathered at the UN to sign a climate deal promising to limit the global temperature increase to within 3.6 degrees Fahrenheit of pre-industrial levels. The agreement will go into effect once 55 nations' governments ratify the agreement. The nations also must represent a total of 55% of the world's greenhouse emissions. The US and China, representing a total of 40% of the world's greenhouse emissions, have both signed the agreement. Representatives of each government brought a child with them to sign the document. The children, including Secretary of State Kerry's granddaughter, represent the future of the world that needs to be protected. Members and environmentalist groups praised the agreement as a crucial first step to limiting the damage done to the world. However, this agreement will mean nothing if the nations don't keep their promise.
