A magnitude-7.3 quake hit the Kumamoto region on the southwestern island of Kyushu in Japan early Saturday. On Thursday night, Kyushu was hit again by a magnitude-6.5 quake. At least 41 Japanese citizens have died, and an estimated 1,500 have been injured. Many homes have lost electricity and running water. Relief and rescue missions are in effect, but a rainy forecast could complicate rescue attempts by setting off mudslides in the affected area. In addition to the many devastating casualties and destruction of homes and infrastructure, aftershocks, including a 5.4 have continued to affect the region. Thankfully, "the Nuclear Regulation Authority reported no abnormalities at Kyushu's Sendai nuclear plant".
