This morning, Ecuador was
in a state of national emergency after a 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck provinces
of Esmeraldas, Los Rios, Manabi, Santa Elena, Guayas and Santo Domingo one
hundred miles from the country’s capital.
It killed at least seventy-seven people and wounded nearly six hundred
more. President Rafael Correa said this
earthquake was the worst to strike Ecuador since 1979. Thousands of police and military troops have
been deployed to the affected areas. These
troops had trouble reaching the worst areas because of the damage done to roads.
