The proposed TTIP (Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership) deal would eliminate almost all tariffs (taxes applied only to imported goods) on trade between the EU and US, which would remove or reduce barriers to trade and foreign investment. Specifically in industries such as pharmaceuticals, cars, energy, finance, chemicals, clothing, food and drink.
This was a concern that was first negotiated at the EU-US summit of November 2011 to increase growth and competitiveness. Then in 2013, the TTIP negotitations were launched.
While Obama strongly agrees with the proposal, thinking it will bring new growth and jobs on both sides of the Atlantic, thousands of people have marched in the German city of Hannover against the proposal. Those against the proposal believe it to be dangerous for the democracy and workers rights. Interestingly, they compare the US role in the proposal as "the Trojan horse- they can't change our whole system, but they will".
