After a pair of earthquakes struck Japan on consecutive days last week, another massive quake has hit Ecuador. This one was measured at 7.8 on the Richter scale, greater than the two which hit Japan, and caused at least 233 deaths with survivors still trapped under rubble. This is the strongest earthquake to hit Ecuador since the 1979 Tumaco earthquake, which was measured at 8.2 and caused between 500 and 600 deaths with eight million dollars in property damage. Ecuador has declared a state of emergency following the quake, with armed forces and aid being deployed to heavily-hit areas.
