Turkish-Dutch columnist, Ebru Umar, was detained from leaving Turkey while authorities questioned her about and investigated Tweets she had posted about President Erdogan. While she has been released, she is unable to leave the country and she has stated that a lawyer is trying to lift the travel restriction so that she can return home. Umar is not the only one dealing with restricted expression in Turkey, as discussed in class, and German Chancellor Angela Merkel and other officials have been accused of not speaking out against Turkey's denial of free speech.
