After Europe and Turkey Strike a Deal, Fears Grow that Migrants Will Turn to Italy

Buildings all over Sicily have been overflowing with migrants who are coming over, and as Migrant Season is only beginning there is not nearly enough space for all of the individuals to be housed. Out of all the people fleeing to Sicily, almost 10,000 of those migrants were rescued at sea and brought to Italy instead, this is a four time increase from just last year. Since the EU has stuck a deal with Turkey to forgo refugee flow into Greece, people are extremely worried that these refugees will take the more dangerous paths of transporting to Italy through Libya. Already can it be recorded that Greece saw a sharp decrease in refugee traffic, while Italy can record an increase in migrant numbers. With the Balkan Route closed to migrants, they are traveling through Italy and either staying there or making their way North. This concerns Austrian leaders who state that over 300,000 migrants could potentially arrive in Italy this year, and if this problem continues to increase they will introduce stricter border control at Brenner Pass, the most crucial North-South border crossing in Europe. This creates tension with Italy, considering it will cause migrants to stay in Italy and expand their population, as well as the possibility it might go against the agreement of open internal borders throughout Europe.
