Raul Castro plans to step down as “president” of Cuba, and I put quotations around president because ironically, he has been their leader for the past 60 years. It is very interesting that after such a long and dominant run he is voluntarily going to give up his role in the Cuban government. I may be just another naïve optimist, but I think this could be promising to the future of Cuba and its relations with its trades and relations with nearby nations. Obviously, his successor (Diz-Canel) will have similar beliefs, but I also think he can improve the nation of Cuba as a whole. However, he has much work to do given the terrible economy he will be left to fix as soon as he takes over. Although, Canel has been a progressive thinker and the diplomacy values he has will decrease the tension and the likelihood of conflict occurring. I don’t believe it will eliminate tension or conflict all at once since Castro won’t be completely out of the government even after he steps down. In conclusion, I presume that Castro will still have great influence in the decisions made going forward until he is completely stripped of power.
