"Merkel Is Next to Visit Trump, Skipping the Bonhomie" post by Kostantina Taseva

The article talks about the upcoming visit of the Chancellor Angela Merkel of Germany to the White House, where she is set to meet with President Trump. Overall, the author goes into three directions: looking at the relationship between The US and Germany, the views of president Trump towards Germany and Europe as well as- the connection between Germany and France. The Chancellor meeting with President Trump comes right after his meeting with The French President. What is interesting here is the President Trump's excitement for meeting with the French president, Emmanuel Macron and his lack of interest in meeting with Merkel. The author goes onto referring to last year's meeting between him and the Chancellor where the lack of chemistry between the two was obvious, and at the same time compares is to his meeting with Mr. Macron- which sparked a lot of debate due to their friendliness. According to Katrin Bennhold, the reason for this is hidden behind Mr. Trump's overall outlook of Germany's power and the standing of the European Union. Lastly, she points out that before meeting with President Trump, both the Chancellor and Mr. Macron have talked among each other, since they both want the same thing: "A permanent exemption from the United States steel and aluminum tariffs and the survival of the Iran nuclear deal (neither of which officials here expected them to obtain)" (Bennhold).
