Theresa May faces anger over Syria raids as Trump declares ‘mission accomplished'
UK PM Theresa May is facing backlash from MPs after she
ordered the UK forces to join together with the US and France in targeted
airstrikes against Syria. Four RAF Tornado GR4 fighter jets launched missiles
at a military facility 15 miles west of Homs, the location Assad is assumed to
stockpile chemical weapons. May argued that the strikes were “right and legal”
as a response to Assad’s use of chemical weapons in Douma eight days ago. The
missile strikes were also meant to send a wider message to others, including
Russia, about the use of chemical weapons.
May, President Macron and President Trump agreed yesterday
that the airstrikes had been successful. German Chancellor Angela Merkel showed
her support for the actions taken by the US, UK, and France. However, some in
the European community were not so happy about such strikes including Present
Vladimir Putin, who condemned the action. Putin called for an emergency UN Security
Council to address the airstrikes. Moscow only gained support from China and
Bolivia, all other countries either abstained or voted against such
condemnation. Indeed some within the UK parliament were not happy that May did
not consult others before working with Trump.
Some within Syria were not happy with the airstrikes because
of Trump’s warning to Assad beforehand. Arguing that Trump has said he is going
to bomb Assad for months and yet, has not effectively helped the Syrian people.
