Winnie Madikizela-Mandela is dead at 81; Fought Apartheid
Winnie Mandela was a key figure in the fight against South African apartheid in the mid to late 90s. She was the wife of Nelson Mandela, the most prominent leader against the South African apartheid. When he was imprisoned for nearly 30 years, Ms. Madikizela-Mandela continued the fight for freedom. She worked very hard to distinguish herself from her husband, because she was a not keen on being labeled as the wife of a great leader, because she was a great leader herself. The death of this influential leader is sad, but inspires many Africans, especially African women, to continue the fight for equality and freedom.
